About Us

Bedford Battery Limited started trading in 1929 making vehicle and radio batteries. It was run then, just as it is today by a father and son team George Ayres. The Company became limited in 1933

Vic Ayres from the small beginnings of making vehicle and radio battery’s took on a service agency for Exide battery’s and the reconditioning of starters and dynamos. This quickly followed branching out into the supply of replacement motor parts, and this has been the history of the business to the present day an ever increasing range of replacement parts.

History

During the 40’s and the 50’s the Company principally traded from the counter in Wellington Street and also from three stock walk-in vans which travelled out every day to different parts of the County, making regular calls on all the various garages and electrical retail shops.

The third generation of the family John entered the Company in 1961. At the time the Company had one delivery van that had regular routes, visiting different parts of the county on different days. It was during the late 60’s that the fleet of delivery vans started to grow and today numbers over 50. At that time it was only necessary for daily deliveries, gradually the demand has increased to delivery demand.

In the early 60’s the original premises of 1 & 3 Wellington Street were enlarged, followed by new offices and then in the 70’s Bedford Battery moved into a new purpose built warehouse on the opposite side of Wellington Street, this has since been extensively enlarged to accommodate an ever increasing product range and new offices.

In 1986 a fourth generation joined the Company, Simon who had spent the previous 18 months working for Lucas. He soon took over the Sales and Marketing side of the Company and is ever conscious of the ever changing and challenging market conditions.

In 1989 the company opened a branch in Wellingborough followed in 1997 by Milton Keyes and Northampton in 2000.

Bedford Battery is a family business and we are proud of the fact that we have arrived at the fourth generation. We are even more proud that we have carried many customers with us along the way. We hate to say no, our extensive stocks and delivery service are what we pride ourselves upon. We are very fortunate in our staff, and the vast experience they are able to offer to customers both trade and consumer.
